Garuda Indonesia Airways Flight 708 is a scheduled passenger flight on February 16, 1967 which crashed during a landing in Manado, the capital of the North Sulawesi province in Indonesia. 22 of the 84 passengers on the flight were killed. All eight crew members survived.

Flight
Flight 708 departs from Jakarta to Manado via Surabaya and Makassar. In the second leg this flight experienced bad weather on flights in Makassar forcing the crew to return to Surabaya. Flight continued the next day to Makassar and to Manado. The weather in Manado is cloudy at 900 feet and 2 km visibility. The approach to runway 18 was made, but after passing a hill with an altitude of 200 meters above the elevation of the runway and 2,720 feet near the threshold, the pilot realized that he was too high and too far to the left of the midpoint. The nose was lowered and the plane turned to the right to prevent the plane from slipping. The downward speed below the speed of 125 knots of the threshold target and the plane, still turning to the right, landed very heavily at a distance of 156 feet from the runway threshold. The bottom was destroyed and the plane slipped and caught fire.

The possible cause of the accident was the decision to make an awkward landing technique resulting in excessive levels at landing. Among the contributing factors are uneven runways from the runway and marginal weather at the time of landing.
